Coding Guidelines

Changes to the evaluation and management (E/M) coding and documentation guidelines went into effect January 1, 2023. For emergency medicine PAs, these changes are important because they significantly impact  charting and billing for all services provided.

In brief, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has de-emphasized history of present illness (HPI), review of systems (ROS), and physical examination (PE) in documentation, but has put the primary emphasis on Medical Decision Making (MDM).

SEMPA recognizes that each individual hospital, EM group, or staffing company will have a different approach to addressing these changes. However, SEMPA is providing some trusted and comprehensive resources to learn more about the billing changes and to prepare EMPAs to document patient encounters in the most efficient and effective way.

The Society has, however, reviewed the content and feel that these resources offer the most complete and helpful information available for EMPAs.
